What does the thickness mean in a wetsuit?Updated a year ago

When we're talking about the thickness of a wetsuit, we're basically talking about how much neoprene rubber is between you and the icy-cold water. Think of it like this: the thicker the suit, the warmer you'll be out there catching waves, especially in chilly waters.

Now, this thickness is usually measured in millimeters and it can vary depending on where you're surfing and what time of year it is. If you're hitting up European waters in summer where the temperature and the water is warmer , you might get away with a thinner wetsuit, like around 2-3 millimeters. But if you're tackling some gnarly winter swells up north, you'll want to suit up with something thicker, like 5/4 millimeters or even more.

Bear in mind that the thickness is not the only factor that influences warmth. All ION wetsuits have inside linings in various degrees that trap air inside their structure and create an insulation layer. Some wetsuits like our Select or Amp Level have inside linings throughout the entire body whereas Core and Elements wetsuits only have a panel in the back.
